Our Programs
MotoMedics International (MMI) works to develop and maintain support and funding for reliable delivery of health services to marginalized and remote populations in Latin America.
MMI partners with established NGOs who are already on the ground in Latin America, benefiting from these organizations’ knowledge of the local people and the issues they face, as well as their understanding of the cultural environment and their ability to deal with the geographic challenges of delivering services to extremely isolated areas.
Because of the remoteness of the communities we serve, residents’ access to any form of health care is almost nonexistent. Much of the population suffers from Chagas disease, a tropical disease that is rampant in these areas. These communities have no running water or electricity. Their water supplies are often contaminated with arsenic and must be filtered. There is no government plan in place to provide services to these forgotten communities. The people have few options and even fewer resources.
In order to provide services to these rural communities, access to vehicles suited to the conditions is crucial to the success of the volunteer health care providers. Volunteer doctors and other health care workers use ATVs, off-road motorcycles, horses and mules to reach these destinations or sometimes simply hike in.
MMI seeks to sustain these projects by funding these transportation needs. We feel this is a vital first step toward ensuring that critical healthcare services are delivered reliably in Latin America.
Currently, MMI is working in conjunction with Fundación Pilotos Solidarios (FPS), a non-profit organization based in Buenos Aires, focused on providing health care and community services in the most remote regions of northwest Argentina. FPS volunteers include physicians from all specialties, dentists, nurses and health care aides as well as biologists, engineers, water/sanitation experts and other specialists.
MMI’s mission is to support these volunteers in their efforts to help these forgotten people. Working with FPS, MMI is currently providing long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets (LLINs) to communities in the province of Santiago del Estero.
